On Thursday, Notre Dame junior tight end Cole Kmet left practice with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

Now it's been revealed that Kmet underwent surgery on his collarbone that required six screws. With the severity of the injury, Kmet is set to miss a long period of time in the 2019 college football season.

Having Kmet ready for the Sept. 14 game with New Mexico is a massive stretch considering his injury. Getting cleared for contact will be tough enough, let alone being game-ready. In all reality, the injury could keep him sidelined all the way into October.

The loss of Kmet in the offense will be a huge one for the Fighting Irish. What could've been a breakout junior year to boost Kmet's draft stock quickly turned to ashes. Now, Kmet will be lucky to touch the field in his junior season and avoid another potential injury.

For the time being, it looks like Notre Dame will have to roll with junior Brock Wright at tight end. Along with Wright, they have two sophomore options at the position, but none stack up to what Kmet could've been.
