The arrest of Washington Redskins receiver Cody Latimer for firing a gun several times in an apartment has taken another sharp and heartbreaking turn.

According to Harvey Steinberg, Latimer's lawyer, the shooting was prompted by an alleged sexual assault of Latimer's 4-year-old son. Latimer is due in court on July 24.

According to Adam Schefter, the allegations concerning Latimer shooting his gun occurred at the same time and location Steinberg is alleging the sexual assault was initiated, which happened to be a poker game with Latimer's friends.

Latimer, a former second-round pick of the Denver Broncos who spent last season with the New York Giants, is facing charges of assault in the second degree, menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, prohibited use of weapons and reckless endangerment.

Latimer's arrest came after a heated argument at that poker game with friend Roderick English. After English agitated him, Latimer left for a half hour before returning with a gun. Latimer fired two shots before getting pinned to the wall.

Latimer's son potentially being assaulted throws another wrinkle into what is already a very surprising case. This is a developing story, with more updates set to hit the wire in the coming days.
