With every baseball fan focused on free agency at the moment, MLB has decided to throw us a curveball.

The league just announced on Tuesday that the 2020 season series between the Diamondbacks and Padres will be played in Mexico City for the first time.

This series will take place in brand-new Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium.

“The D-backs are committed to spreading our game internationally and specifically throughout Mexico, where we have thousands of loyal fans across the country,” D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall said. “As a member of MLB’s International Committee, I’ve seen first-hand the incredible efforts made on a league-wide level to help grow the sport of baseball across the globe and we are honored to be selected to play in Mexico City.”

MLB teams also played in Mexico just this past season, leading to some wholesome moments such as when Alex Bregman gave this postgame interview in Spanish for the Astros.

These previous series' have clearly been successful in promoting the MLB internationally, so the league is smart to continue this initiative.

The Cubs and Cardinals will play in London next year to try and replicate the success seen when the Yankees and Red Sox battled there in 2019.

The initiative by the MLB to make baseball a more international game is intelligent, and a cause we can all get behind.
