The New York Yankees have no shortage of exciting prospects in their farm system, and plenty of them could soon be playing in the bigs.

But from the plethora of possible future stars to pick from, MLB.com has tabbed right-handed starter Clarke Schmidt as the Yankees' top breakout candidate in 2020.

It's easy to see why there are such high hopes for the organization's No. 5 overall prospect. Even for a team loaded with pitching talent, he's got the stuff to hang with the best. There will be chances for him to get innings, and when he does, it'll almost certainly be something special.

The 23-year-old has dazzled in the minor leagues. With each promotion, he has shown steady signs of improvement. In 19 innings in Double-A last year, Schmidt was superb, pitching to the tune of an impressive 2.37 ERA. He managed 19 strikeouts while issuing just one walk.

Such masterful control bodes well for his future with the team. If he can succeed in Triple-A, he could prove to be a critical piece for a potential Yankees playoff push late in the 2020 season.
