With spring ball fully here, Major League Baseball's regular season is just around the corner. Many big-name players have latched on with new organizations via trade and free agency. Zack Wheeler is among those notable players to have landed with a new club, but a new report revealed just how close he was to being offloaded by the Mets back in July.

According to Andy Martino of the SNY network, the Mets and Yankees, who were deep in trade talks regarding Wheeler at the deadline, had actually come to terms on a potential trade. At the last minute, however, things completely fell apart for some mysterious reason.

The two sides were reportedly in the process of reviewing medicals before a last-minute hitch, which remains unknown, blew up the deal.

The Yankees are probably wishing they'd been able to complete that swap right about now, considering they'll be dealing with the temporary loss of James Paxton and the long-term absence of Luis Severino.

Meanwhile, Wheeler penned a five-year, $118 million deal with the Phillies in the offseason, while the Yankees chose to pursue lauded ace Gerrit Cole instead.

Yankees fans who were hoping Wheeler would be brought aboard at the deadline last year will surely grimace at just how close the team was to acquiring the 29 year old.
