Hitting 53 home runs in a season is a good way to catapult yourself right to the front of NL Rookie of the Year race.

After breaking Aaron Judge's record for home runs in a season by a rookie, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso nabbed the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year award.

Playing in all but one game, Alonso piled up 85 extra base hits and 120 RBIs despite not having much protection in a lackluster Mets lineup. Alonso's historic season was enough to beat out Braves righty Mike Soroka and Padres budding star Fernando Tatis Jr.

Alonso became the sixth Mets rookie to win the Rookie of the Year award, joining Tom Seaver, Jon Matlack, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden and teammate Jacob deGrom. Not bad company to be in.

There isn't a ton of good news around the Mets right now, especially considering how last season ended, but their fans can take solace in the fact that they have a budding superstar who is poised to dominate the National League for years to come.
