Mets Get Tremendous Update on Jed Lowrie but Terrible News on Robert Gsellman

After watching him fall off of the face of the earth at Spring Training, the New York Mets might actually finally get one of their key offseason acquisitions into the batting order.

Manager Mickey Callaway said that Jed Lowrie could find his way into the fold in the near future, though he's not quite out of the woods yet from knee and calf injuries. Fortunately, he's ready for some rehab DH duty in Class-A.

Unfortunately, the great update on Lowrie came with the terrible news on reliever Robert Gsellman. The right-handed bullpen arm has a partial lat tear, and though his recovery time is still yet to be determined, it's more than likely that he's thrown his last pitch in 2019.

Lowrie has spent the entire season trying to get his body right, and the Mets could certainly use his bat in the lineup. They sit just two games back of a Wild Card spot in the NL, and sliding him into the order could give them just the offensive boost they need to close the gap.

But just as they need Lowrie, so too do they need Gsellman. He takes a large chunk of the Mets' innings, and though he sports a rather disappointing 4.66 ERA, the Mets at least know what to expect out of him.

Now they may very well be forced to dip into a supply of unproven arms from the minor leagues in the hopes of finding someone capable of replacing his innings. That's not an ideal situation to be in smack in the middle of the playoff push.

It's just another case of things going wrong even when they go right for the Mets in what has truly been a wild season.
