New York Mets fans were hoping for some big changes this offseason, and the first of those has finally arrived.

After two seasons at the helm, the Mets have decided to part ways with Mickey Callaway, officially relieving the 44-year-old of his duties on Thursday.

Callaway was highly scrutinized during his managerial tenure with the Mets. After trading away key prospects and re-tooling the roster ahead of the 2019 season in order to reach the playoffs, the team fell short of the second Wild Card spot with an 86-76 record.

Rather than allow Callaway one more shot to reach the playoffs in 2020, the Mets ended his reign with one year remaining on his contract. Across two seasons, Callaway led the team to a combined 163-161 record.

Despite the admirable second-half push from the squad, the team failed to extend the season into October, which seems to have been the final nail in Callaway's proverbial coffin. Though the roster gelled, replete with good vibes, Callaway's in-game decision-making was spotty at best, and he was unable to develop a competent bullpen or maximize his rotation, both glaring faults, since he's coming from the pitching side of things.

The Mets will now be searching for their next skipper following Callaway's exit, with some early reports suggesting Carlos Beltran could be an option.
