New York Mets fans entered the offseason with some amazing news: Carlos Beltran was the new manager and the Wilpon family would be selling the team to billionaire Steve Cohen.

Then Beltran was fired for his role in the Houston Astros cheating scandal and news dropped Tuesday that Cohen may be backing out of his agreement to buy the team.

The Wilpons reportedly tried to change the agreement, and the insanely rich Cohen was not happy about that.

In the middle of all the billionaire drama is the fans. Fans are still waiting for the first World Series title since 1986 and have seen a magical 2015 season turn into several years of failed expectations and turnover at the manager position.

There is the chance the Wilpons can salvage this and it may come down to getting Cohen back on board in exchange for whatever it is billionaires want. That would be necessary for some Mets fans to continue rooting for the team.

This ownership situation is far worse than the Beltran saga. Bad ownership goes beyond just a few seasons, and sinks into the very fabric of a franchise. We'll see if the Mets are beyond saving.
