Mets Actually Have Suitors for Jed Lowrie Trade But They Might Not Like the Stipulations

The Mets are once again gearing up to push their way into the postseason in 2020. Already on the roster are franchise cornerstones in Cy Young award winner Jacob DeGrom and reigning home run king Pete Alonso.

While there is tons of promise on this Mets' roster, there are also some players who are excess to requirements. Jed Lowrie fits that mold to a tee, and Brodie Van Wagenen and Co. have reportedly been looking to deal the veteran infielder.

Lowrie's 2019 campaign was nothing short of a disappointment. After latching a two-year, $20 million deal in Queens, the 35-year-old had an injury-riddled season that saw him make a grand total of eight plate appearances, through which he went hitless with one walk and four strikeouts.

With Lowrie counting for $10 million against the payroll in 2020, the Mets are eager to find a trade partner, and it looks as if there is some interest for the veteran. However, if the Mets are to offload Lowrie to one of his potential suitors -- the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics have been reported to have interest -- they may not be too fond of their trade partner's conditions.

Per Andy Martino, the Athletics would only acquire Lowrie if the Mets were willing to pay most of the $10 million he's due this year. Considering the purpose of offloading Lowrie would be to free up some money and remain under the luxury tax, it seems unlikely the Mets would be interested in paying the majority of his salary.

The Mets have had their eyes on Pirates outfielder Starling Marte, and are currently courting free agent reliever Dellin Betances as well. They've also acquired Brad Brach, Rick Porcello, Michael Wacha and Jake Marisnick in the offseason. In order to facilitate these deals while remaining under the luxury tax, moving Lowrie will be their main priority.
