The Miami Marlins are in the midst of a total rebuild under the ownership of Derek Jeter. On Thursday, the Marlins sent shockwaves throughout Major League Baseball.

According to Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extrabase, the Marlins are signing manager Don Mattingly to a two-year contract extension. The deal will be made official on Friday during a press conference.

The news comes as a shock, considering that Mattingly was hired by former team owner Jeffrey Loria. Once Jeter and his group bought the Marlins franchise, many thought it was the beginning of the end for Mattingly, as his contract was set to expire at season's end.

However, as ESPN's Jeff Passan states, ownership believes that Mattingly has performed admirably in the midst of their massive fire sale, dating back to 2017. After adding young players to the pipeline, ownership felt Mattingly is the best person to lead the youth movement and eventually build a winner.

As of Thursday night, the Marlins are 53-99 on the year, destined for their third 100-loss season in franchise history. Overall, Mattingly owns a 272-364 record as Marlins skipper.

While the move is confusing to some, the Miami Marlins are all-in on Mattingly as team manager.
