LSU Making College Football Playoff Even if They Lose SEC Title Would Be a Massive Insult to Big 12 and Pac-12

There are always claims of SEC bias from fans of college football teams not in that dominant conference so laden with history and hardware.

And as it stands right now, the SEC could get two teams into the College Football Playoff if Georgia defeats LSU in the conference championship on Saturday. That would surely mean a major snub of a one-loss conference champ, either from the Big 12 and Pac-12.

Ohio State, LSU, and Clemson all enter the weekend with undefeated records. After them come four one-loss teams in Georgia, Utah, Oklahoma, and Baylor.

Utah is taking on Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship, while Oklahoma and Baylor are meeting for the Big 12 title. An Oregon win would doom the Pac-12's chances of a playoff team altogether, but the winner of Oklahoma-Baylor has an argument to make it in regardless of what happens in the Pac-12.

The problem is the SEC Championship. If LSU wins, that would knock out two-loss Georgia and open the path for Utah and the Big 12 champ. But if Georgia wins, it is highly possible that LSU, with only one loss, remains in the top four. Pac-12 and Big 12 brass have to be praying for an LSU victory to avoid any controversy; one of these two Power 5 conferences is going to miss the Playoff otherwise.

No matter what happens, there will be strong calls to expand the Playoff field to six or even eight teams. And it's going to feel like a big, big mess.

Having two SEC teams make the final four would send a message of disrespect to at least one one-loss conference champion. What is the point of playing for conference titles if they don't end up getting a top team into the playoff, whereas an SEC non-champion can squeeze their way in?

Prepare for Playoff chaos next Sunday night. Brace yourselves.
