After a down year in 2019, Oakland Athletics slugger Khris Davis is at no loss of spirit in Spring Training. When asked about which player on his club will have a breakout year, Davis insisted it would be him, making a self-confident and self-deprecating quip.

“Me,” Davis said after a long pause. “I think I’m going to break out and be back to what everybody wants … Going to hit .247 again."

Davis' comment is in reference to his previous four seasons, in which he established himself as one of the American League's premier sluggers, all while bizarrely hitting for a middling .247 batting average each year.

His middle-of-the-road average from 2015-2018 was backed up by 170 home runs, including a career-high 48 in 2018. That number shrank to just 23 in 2019, along with his average which reverted to .220.

His lack of production can be credited to a hip injury he sustained in a collision with an outfield fence in Pittsburgh. Now, at 32 years of age, Davis faces the task of bouncing back from an injury-riddled disappointing season as he looks to return to his past form.
