Here's Why the Chiefs' Inactivity With Free Agents and Trades This Offseason is Actually Good

You'd think the Kansas City Chiefs would have been ready to make a splash or two in free agency or on the trade market coming off their Super Bowl win, but that's not how head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach do business.

You see, they planned for this squad to be intact for quite a while in order to limit roster turnover and moving on from familiarity. Kansas City made all its big splashes last offseason when they signed Tyreek Hill to an extension, traded for Frank Clark and added Tyrann Mathieu. Those guys aren't going anywhere.

The Super Bowl champs are coming back with pretty much the exact same squad (with the exception of Kendall Fuller, Terrell Suggs, Emmanuel Ogbah and a couple others) -- and will actually get some players, like Juan Thornhill, back from injury -- with their only responsibility being to get Patrick Mahomes a contract extension and to re-work Sammy Watkins' deal.

The Chiefs have just $1.4 million in cap space this offseason and they still need to create some room to welcome the 2020 draft class. They only have five picks this year, so that shouldn't be a problem either. Nonetheless, that's a big reason they haven't been wheeling and dealing in free agency or via trades. They need to restructure within first in order to prepare for the immediate future (draft selections) and long-term future (Mahomes extension).

Every NFL fan loves watching their team hit the ground running when the new league year begins, but Chiefs fans should take solace in the fact Kansas City didn't have to do that. They're resting up and coming back with the same core components. They will be ready to rip through a significantly weakened AFC come Week 1.

How many other teams would kill to have this kind of roster intact with the only responsibility being to free up a few million in cap space to prepare for the NFL Draft? All KC has to do is stay on their current path.
