When Josh Hamilton was named AL MVP in 2010 with the Texas Rangers, it felt like the culmination of an incredible comeback story. Fans saw a man who overcame substance abuse issues to reach the pinnacle of individual achievement in the game of baseball. Sadly, it's clear that Hamilton never truly outrun the darkness of the past.

A grand jury in Tarrant County, Texas has indicted Hamilton for felony injury to a child following an alleged assault against his oldest daughter in September of 2019, per Jozelyn Escobedo of WFAA-TV in Dallas.

Hamilton, who played nine seasons in the MLB for the Reds, Rangers, and Angels, was first arrested on suspicion of the assualt back in October.

Court documents reportedly maintain that Hamilton hit his daughter multiple times in response to something she said to him, and threw a chair and at her before taking her to a bedroom to continue the horrific assault that included striking her in the back. It's simply nightmarish stuff, and the very last thing you'd ever imagine a father doing to his own flesh and blood.

Following the alleged incident, Hamilton's ex-wife, Katie, reportedly sought a restraining order against him in order to protect the family.

Whatever comes next for Hamilton isn't going to be good. Given his history of legal troubles, it's not likely that a judge is going to hand him any leniency -- especially given that he stands formally accused of striking a child. At a certain point, a man just runs out of chances. Josh Hamilton is innocent until proven guilty, but this could very well be the end of the line for him as a free man.
