It goes without saying that the play of Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence will be pivotal in determining the outcome of Monday night's National Championship bout between No. 1 LSU and No. 3 Clemson.

However, tabbing them as the X-factors in this matchup comprised of superstar talent would be a scapegoat declaration.

For Dabo Swinney and Co. to repeat as champions, the play of coveted linebacker Isaiah Simmons will be critical.

Simmons is projected to be a top-10 selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, and for good reason. He's just as comfortable dropping back in coverage as he is bull-rushing opposing offensive lines.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound physical specimen has logged 97 combined tackles (14.5 for a loss), seven sacks, three interceptions, six pass deflections, and a pair of forced fumbles.

If he's able to disrupt Joe Burrow to the point where he can't float rainbows to Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase at will, Clemson will be in pole position to hoist the trophy.

Of course, that's easier said than done.

We're not asserting that Simmons has to record several sacks. But if he musters enough pressure that creates time for the Tigers defensive front to break through LSU's imposing offensive line, we could be looking at a winning recipe for Clemson.
