Injury Troubles Appear to Be Following Jason Verrett to the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers took a potentially rewarding gamble in signing former Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett to a four-year, $7.88 million contract in March. Unfortunately, early returns indicate Verrett's injury woes may continue in his new home.

According to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group, the oft-injured Verrett left practice Wednesday with an ankle issue.

Verrett looked like he was worth the risk for the 49ers, as the financial hit of his contract is miniscule compared with other cornerbacks of his talent level. However, the 2015 Pro Bowler has simply been unable to stay on the field during his short career, appearing in just five regular season games in the last three seasons.

Despite entering training camp with a clean bill of health after missing all of 2018 with a torn Achilles, Verrett's unfortunate injury luck has dragged him down again, though it's too early to know the severity of the issue.

Verrett, along with teammate Nick Bosa, will undergo an MRI on his ankle to determine the right course of action moving forward.

It would be encouraging to see the 28-year-old cornerback return to his Pro Bowl form and reward the 49ers for taking a chance on him, but his injury history does not inspire confidence. It's up to him to change minds in Santa Clara, but he won't have unlimited chances.
