Ideal MLB All-Star Game 2019 American League Starting Lineup
By Jerry Trotta
Its utterly mind-blowing to fathom that the baseball season is nearing its halfway mark. It feels like the season started less than a month ago.
But, here we are, with just a few days left in June and exactly two weeks away from the 2019 MLB All-Star Game. When you consider that the finalists for the clash were announced a couple of days ago, it's time to give our ideal lineup for the Midsummer Classic -- more specifically, the American League lineup.
1. George Springer (OF)
The Astros' superstar centerfielder has missed Houston's last 27 games but returned to the lineup from a strained hamstring Wednesday. With over a month on the shelf, Springer still ranked second amongst all AL outfielders in total votes. He's batting .308 with 17 dingers, 43 RBI, and 41 runs scored. What more need be said?
2. DJ LeMahieu (Second Base)
Sorry, Jose Altuve (and Tommy La Stella), this is an ideal concept that is not based on popularity. LeMahieu has earned this starting position from Opening Day and is a good shout to be signing of the offseason as he currently leads the MLB in batting average with runners in scoring position. His numbers across the board are simply staggering.
3. Mike Trout (OF)
The game's current best player batting third in the All-Star Game? We want to hear NO rebuttals for this one. Trout is on pace to take home his third American League MVP Award, posting superb numbers across all major statistical categories.
4. J.D. Martinez (DH)
Martinez might not be boasting the historic offensive season that he did a short season ago, but his numbers are still All-Star-starter worthy. The Red Sox slugger has clubbed 16 home runs to go with 42 RBI and a .284 average, and has been the best DH in the league.
5. Michael Brantley (OF)
Is it fair to call Brantley THE signing of the offseason? After an injury-plagued 2018 season, the 32-year-old vet has tallied a .322 batting average, 43 RBI, 38 runs scored, 98 hits, and an .893 OPS. He deserves the recognition as a starter in this year's contest.
6. Gary Sanchez (Catcher)
El Gary has come back with a vengeance in 2019! The Kraken has belted 23 home runs along with 52 RBI and a .959 OPS. More importantly he stepped up BIG time in the middle of the Yankees order while the likes of Aaron Judge, Didi Gregorius, and Giancarlo Stanton were nursing injuries for almost the entirety of the first half.
7. Carlos Santana (First Base)
Santana's battle with Luke Voit will go right down to the wire and will lead most of the Pinstripe faithful with a sour taste in their mouth. But, Carlos is the only Indians player on the final ballot and let's remember that 2019's fixture is being played at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Their offensive numbers are similar across the board, except for average, where Santana's .291 average is far superior to Luke's .268.
8. Jorge Polanco (Shortstop)
The 25-year-old shortstop has burst onto the scene in a BIG way in 2019, batting .326 to go with 98 hits, 48 runs scored, and an OPS of .925. If that doesn't warrant a starting nod in the game, we don't know what will.
9. Alex Bregman (Third Base)
That .259 average would turn us off in most cases, but there's simply nobody else close in voting. Additionally, Bregman's numbers outside of his BA are starter-worthy -- 21 home runs, 51 RBI, 52 runs, .388 OBP. Gio Urshela is a great story in the Bronx but he's not an everyday starter like Bregman.
