How Drew Brees Returning to Saints in 2020 Affects Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill

The most statistically proficient quarterback in NFL history is lacing it up in the Big Easy for at least one more season, as Drew Brees announced that he intends to play for the New Orleans Saints once again in 2020.

Both of New Orleans' 2019 backups, Teddy Bridgewater and Swiss Army knife Taysom Hill, are destined to be free agents this year, and Brees returning changes things for both of them.

Bridgewater, fresh off throwing nine touchdowns in five starts, all of which were wins, is now expected to leave New Orleans after this deal in pursuit of an eight-figure salary as either a starter or bridge quarterback.

Bridgewater was a Pro Bowler with the Minnesota Vikings before his knee injury, and he showed that he can be a deadly accurate pocket passer last season, so he's earned a chance to prove it over 16 games once again.

Hill, a receiver/running back/punt protector with delusions of grandeur that cause him to believe he is a franchise quarterback, is a restricted free agent. Hill is not good enough as a passer to be a No. 2 quarterback, but his role as the NFL's Ben Zobrist could be attractive to a litany of different teams.

New Orleans could strong-arm Hill into staying by placing a first or second-round tender on him, however.

Sean Payton said during Super Bowl Week that it is extremely unlikely that the Saints bring back all three of their quarterbacks from last season. Bridgewater appears destined to bolt somewhere else for starter money, while Hill could try to embark upon the fool's errand that is attempting to be a franchise signal caller. A new backup for Brees is almost certainly going to be a need in 2020.
