VIDEO: Houston QB Idiotically Spikes Ball With Clock Already Stopped in Waning Moments vs SMU
By Jerry Trotta

The Houston Cougars were driving in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter on Thursday night with a chance to tie the undefeated No. 16 SMU Mustangs with a field goal. Quarterback Clayton Tune had the Cougs across midfield with five ticks left after hitting his receiver on an out route near the sideline, thus stopping the clock as he ran out of bounds. It was a perfectly executed play, but what followed was a brain fart for the ages from Tune, who inexplicably spiked the pigskin on the very next play... despite the clock already being stopped.

Talk about cracking under pressure. It would be unfair to say that Tune's blunder cost the Cougars a chance at tying things up; you just don't know what could have happened on that second down play had he not spiked the ball and burned the opportunity.
Houston ultimately ended up falling short in this one, and Tune costing his offense a crucial second in addition to the down definitely hurts.

We'll hazard a guess and say that Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen will be implementing a profusion of two-minute drills at practice next week.
