Giants receiver Golden Tate said he is considering suing the doctor who prescribed him the fertility drug clomiphene, which later resulted in his four-game suspension to begin the NFL season.

Before Tate's April drug test results came in, the veteran WR found out the substance was banned and self-reported his usage to the NFL in hopes of a lighter punishment.

While Tate appealed the four-game suspension, he lost under the stipulation that all players are responsible for all substances that enter the body.

This incident is eerily similar to when former Colts linebacker Robert Mathis tested positive for the same drug, appealed his suspension and lost in 2014.

“Initially the doctor said it was not a banned substance. In fact, he had given it to other NFL players, which I trusted it and kept living my life," Tate said after Wednesday's practice.

Tate clearly feels wronged by the doctor who prescribed him the drug, but it remains to be seen if a judge will determine if this was ultimately his own fault for not thoroughly researching the drug before consuming it. As a professional athlete, there's rarely an acceptable excuse for consuming a banned substance.
