VIDEO: FS1's Joy Taylor Identifies What NFL Players Must Demand in Exchange for a 17-Game Season
By Evan Wolff

The NFL landscape has changed significantly over the past few seasons, with a focus on player safety finally entering the mainstream conversation at long last. Proposed rule adjustments meant to protect the integrity of the game and the overall health of players on the field have been a common sight, but one possible rule change would shake up the NFL more than any single on-field measure: a 17-game regular season schedule. This proposal has been met with resistance, and Fox Sports 1's Joy Taylor spoke on "The Herd" about exactly what the NFL Players Assocation ought to receive as a guarantee before agreeing to add this extra game: lifetime health care coverage.
I’m all for a 17 game NFL season, with one condition. @theherd pic.twitter.com/kzYUNh5a6S

It seems a little ridiculous that lifetime health insurance for a contact sport played by gigantic super-athletes isn't already guaranteed, 16 games or otherwise. Taylor absolutely nails this, as it's ridiculous that the MLB has a better health insurance apparatus in place than the most violent, physically damaging major sport in America.
I am 100% opposed to adding any games to an already long NFL season. But I agree with Joy here. If the NFL wants a 17-game season, then every vested player should receive lifetime healthcare instead of the current 5 years post-retirement.

those terms should be nonnegotiable https://t.co/OQIZYbPQTA
Forget about getting another regular season game on television that no one outside of league execs and advertisers are asking for. The NFL should be prioritizing health care for its employees yesterday. If there's ever to be a "Week 18," the conversation between the league and its players' union must begin there.
