This Eagles-Lions Trade for Darius Slay Could Work

The Detroit Lions and cornerback Darius Slay appear headed toward a breakup this offseason. He has made three straight Pro Bowls and is coming off a year where he sat out during some offseason activities.

The Lions made the decision to sign corner Desmond Trufant in free agency. Slay has one year left on his deal and a trade now looks more likely than ever.

The Philadelphia Eagles are a team that could be interested in Slay. The entire team only had 11 interceptions in 2019 and leading tackler Malcolm Jenkins is now with the New Orleans Saints. Ronald Darby may not be re-signed and that leaves Rasul Douglas as the highest-paid corner on the team at just over $2 million.

The Eagles have 10 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft and own pick No. 53 overall in the second round. That pick should be more than enough to get Slay from a Lions team that just wants to move on. The corner is only under contract for one year so the bargaining power has also gone down for Detroit.

Philly was in the bottom half of the NFL last season by giving up 241.6 passing yards per game. Talent is leaving the secondary and a second-round pick for Slay is a fair price. The ultimate goal would to be to re-sign him after 2020, which is possible if the two sides are willing to give and take.
