You know you've made a great pick in the NFL Draft when you need to post an essay defending it an hour after the fact in the name of spin control.

The Eagles shocked the world when they took Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts No. 53 overall in the 2020 Draft despite the presence of Carson Wentz. Roseman defended the pick by saying they wanted to surround Wentz with as many good football players as possible while also citing a need to become a "quarterback factory."

This still doesn't offer much in the way of clarity, as drafting a backup quarterback who won't see the field much next season is questionable move considering how Philly passed on some quality linebackers and defensive backs.

Some analysts, like former NFL receiver Torrey Smith, take offense to the suggestion that Hurts will play a Taysom Hill role, as Smith claims Hurts has proven himself as a quarterback enough to the point where he should be considered a signal-caller through and through.

Hurts gives the Eagles peace of mind knowing that they have a solid backup plan if Wentz's injuries catch up to him once again, but that doesn't change the fact that a team looking for that edge to get over the hump just drafted a backup quarterback despite the fact they have a Pro Bowl starter under contract until 2024.
