Dustin Pedroia was a regular in the Boston Red Sox lineup from 2007-2017. He made four All-Star Games in that span, won the American League Rookie of the Year in 2007, and was the AL MVP in 2008.

Then came 2018 when Pedroia appeared in only three games after having knee surgery. That total bumped up to six games in 2019 after he experienced further complications with the injury, and the one-time star is already back on the injured list this year.

Pedroia's career appeared to be done last year when he had several setbacks related to his left knee. This latest IL stint all but ends his career in Major League Baseball.

Just don't expect Pedroia to officially retire before his contract is up following the 2021 season. He's still getting paid a hefty sum to be in the organization. He will make over a combined $25 million between 2020 and 2021 and remains an albatross on the payroll.

The best course of action for the Red Sox is just to eat the money and move forward at second base, which shouldn't be a problem since they've done that the past two years. For all Boston fans, pour one out for a Sox legend who likely won't see the field again for the team.
