When the Packers selected running back Dexter Williams in the sixth round of this year's NFL Draft, it was assumed he was merely a depth piece who would have a shot at making the roster come September. However, Williams has turned some heads with his explosiveness so far during camp.

Couple that with Jamaal Williams' history of underperforming for the team, and there could be a competition for the No. 2 running back spot behind incumbent starter Aaron Jones.

The rookie had an impressive career at Notre Dame and wrapped it up with a standout senior season in which he compiled 995 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. Even more impressive, he did that in just 9 games, averaging 6.3 yards per carry and adding 16 catches for the Fighting Irish.

Jamaal Williams is a talented young back and remains the favorite to secure the second spot on the depth chart, but his career clip of 3.7 yards per carry indicates he may lack the explosion Dexter could bring on the field. If Jamaal falters during the preseason, he could be at risk of losing touches to the rookie.

Both Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones have been absent from practice of late with injuries, which has given the rookie the opportunity to secure valuable reps with the first team. All reports indicate he's taken advantage of those reps:

Expectations should be tempered for Dexter, as he is still just a sixth-round pick with questionable value in the passing game. However, he should certainly be a name to watch moving forward for Green Bay faithful.
