The Cubs have a few candidates lined up to assume the mantle of manager after they parted ways with Joe Maddon earlier this week. Although a new skipper won't magically steer Chicago in the right direction, the role has to be filled nonetheless.

After some speculation, Cubbies are reportedly looking at former Yankees manager Joe Girardi, member of the 2016 championship squad David Ross and current first base coach Will Venable as possible successors to Maddon.

The team already conducted an interview with Mark Loretta on Thursday.

Girardi seems to be a hot commodity among the teams looking for a new manager, and it may just be a matter of where, not if, the 2006 NL Manager of the Year gets a job.

Ross' connection with the Cubs could play a major factor in their interest, though. Ross only played his last two MLB seasons in Chicago, but the championship season could sway the front office right into the two-time champion's arms. Catchers are also the most common players to transition into managerial roles.

Venable's case is strong as well though, being the only candidate on the reported list who currently works for the team. Being the Cubbies' first base coach since November 2017, the former outfielder has had nearly the past two years with the organization.
