Shepherd, 26, made a transition to become a starting pitcher last year after spending four years as a reliever. However, being a starter has not worked to Shepherd's benefit.
He has been susceptible to giving up the long ball as he has allowed 11 homers through 29.1 innings pitched at Triple-A Pawtucket. He had an ugly 10.01 ERA having surrendered 33 earned runs while striking out just 30 batters.

He was ranked as the 58th best prospect in the Red Sox farm system coming into this year. Shepherd has a career 4.09 ERA in 158 games in the minors with 35 games started.
