The Dallas Cowboys have been hard at work locking down key members of the squad for the foreseeable future, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

The latest defenseman to open up extension discussions with the organization is linebacker Jaylon Smith.

Smith was instrumental to Dallas' NFC East winning season in 2018, recording 121 total tackles alongside 4.0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 4 pass breakups.

He's set to enter his third season in the league, but the Cowboys seem keen on locking him up long term before he gets closer to hitting the open market. The 23-year-old stud started six games as a rookie, but was an every day starter last season.

Smith was the Cowboys' second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, selected as the 34th overall pick out of Notre Dame, where he earned his degree this offseason. He's quickly become a vital asset for Dallas' defensive identity, so the organization feels locking up a long-term deal for him is a necessity.
