The mixed martial arts world hasn't seen "The Notorious MMA" Conor McGregor in the Octagon since his UFC lightweight championship defeat against Khabib Nurmagomedov last October, which infamously ended with an all-out brawl that spilled out in all directions.

But finally, it appears that McGregor's return is drawing ever-closer.

On Wednesday, UFC's official Twitter account sent happy birthday wishes to former lightweight Champion Frankie "The Answer" Edgar, who turned 38. McGregor replied to the tweet to send aong similar wishes, but he also threw down a challenge for a fight against the veteran in December.

Edgar replied to McGregor's tweet, saying that he's already agreed to the fight in principle, and that it's up to "The Notorious" and UFC President Dana White to make it a reality.

McGregor then tweeted out a plea to White to make the fight happen, and promised to give his share of the purse to charity.

When it comes with McGregor, his tweets are not to be taken overly seriously. He's made pleas for fights in the past, like with Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone earlier this year, only to see nothing much come of it.

McGregor was set to to book his return fight, but all of the momentum to a halt after suffering a broken hand in July. The goal for McGregor is to have an eventual rematch against Nurmagomedov for the 155-pound title, but McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, wants his return bout to be against Edgar.

Edgar is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight championship at UFC 240. Following the defeat, Edgar teased a move down to the 135-pound bantamweight division.

Will this fight actually happen, or will it prove to be another attention ploy by McGregor? A return at UFC 245 on December 14th may be a bit too soon, but fight fans can -- and should -- continue to hold out some hope.
