Colts Get Free Agency Steal After Signing Former Browns and Raiders CB TJ Carrie
By Scott Rogust
The Indianapolis Colts needed cornerback help this offseason, and started off on the wrong foot by adding ex-Minnesota Viking Xavier Rhodes. Fortunately, the Colts completely redeemed themselves on Monday afternoon.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Colts agreed to terms with former Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders cornerback TJ Carrie.
As mentioned earlier, Indianapolis decided to add a veteran in Rhodes to come off the bench for young corners Kenny Moore and Rock Ya-Sin. The thing is, Rhodes was the equivalent of burnt toast on the field last season, becoming a total liability for the Vikings.
Now, they get a guy in Carrie who could eventually leap over Rhodes on the depth chart.
Carrie was a former 2014 seventh-round pick by the Oakland Raiders, where he impressed enough to earn a four-year, $31 million deal from the Browns in 2018. During his two seasons in Cleveland, Carrie started in 14 games, piling up 125 tackles, 12 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, two interceptions, and two sacks.
His release by the Browns in February was more due to a new regime entering Cleveland than Carrie's overall play. Carrie has shown the potential to be a quality defensive back in the NFL, and now he has the chance to shine with the Colts on a deal that benefits both parties.
