Chiefs Sign Gigantic TE Ricky Seals-Jones Just in Case Disaster Strikes

The 2019 Kansas City Chiefs got excellent production from the tight end position en route to their Super Bowl victory, with the Pro Bowl efforts of Travis Kelce leading the way. However, the mark of any good organization is to make sure that their depth charts are ready to withstand even the worst of times, which is why the Chiefs went out and signed an insurance policy. Free agent Ricky Seals-Jones, formerly of the Browns, is joining up on a one-year deal, per insider Terez Paylor.

While Kelce was one the best receivers (not simply among tight ends) in the entire NFL, his teammates that sat behind him on the depth chart weren't so productive. Kelce's backups, Blake Bell and Deon Yelder, only had 117 combined receiving yards all season long, and neither managed a touchdown. Seals-Jones is a clear upgrade as a reserve option, having found the end zone four times last season with Clevland. He is only entering his fourth year as a pro, and is a big target at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds.

While he only caught the ball 14 times last season, Seals-Jones' nose for the end zone is a valued asset for a team driven by maximum offensive production. Tight end is a physically demanding position, and while virtually no one in the NFL can match the particular talents of Travis Kelce, Seals-Jones makes for a competent understudy and will provide peace of mind for head coach Andy Reid.

Not all moves that an NFL front office makes are gonna be flashy. If Travis Kelce (knock on wood) goes down with an injury and Ricky Seals-Jones fills in admirably, it will be a disaster avoided for the Kansas City Chiefs and a real feather in the cap for this front office.
