The Kansas City Chiefs answer at QB behind Patrick Mahomes is Matt Moore and...former Vanderbilt star Kyle Shurmur.

After showing out in the preseason under Andy Reid's tutelage, KC is signing Shurmur as their emergency QB. Shurmur will also take over practice squad duties.

Shurmur, the son of New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur, received praise from Reid after the Chiefs final preseason game. The 22-year-old former Commodore completed 14 of 20 passes against Green Bay with a touchdown and an ill-advised interception. Still, Shurmur was competent enough to earn the No. 3 QB job over Chase Litton, who saw second-half action vs Green Bay.

Shurmur has circumstance to thank for his roster spot, as the Chiefs only need his services thanks to the severe injury suffered by Chad Henne, who was placed on injured reserve in a very related move on Sunday.

While Shurmur has yet to make much of an impact at the professional level, at Vanderbilt he completed 57 percent of his passes for 64 touchdowns to only 29 interceptions.
