3 Free Agents the Celtics Should Target This Offseason

The Boston Celtics made a huge splash in free agency in 2019 by signing star point guard Kemba Walker to a four-year, $140 million contract. With Walker's massive contract and Gordon Hayward's $34 million player option for next season, the Celtics are going to have to shop in the bargain bin to sign players this offseason.

These three players might not be franchise altering stars, but are role players the Celtics should be chasing this offseason.

3. D.J. Augustin

Behind Kemba Walker and Marcus Smart, the Celtics are lacking in guard play. This season, their second-string point guard was Brad Wanamaker, a 30-yea- old in just his second year in the league. D.J. Augustin would be a huge upgrade off the bench for Boston. The current Orlando Magic floor general is one of the most sturdy veterans in the league, and will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

2. Derrick Favors

Derrick Favors' role on the New Orleans Pelicans has diminished since Zion Williamson returned from injury. Favors will be an unrestricted free agent in 2020, and the nine-season veteran center would help stabilize the Celtics interior defense. Favors is currently making $16 million on this season, but will not be able to find that money again in a league that devalues traditional big-men. Boston needs Favors' talents, and likely will have just enough to go after him.

1. Dwight Howard

Dwight Howard revitalized his career this season, coming off the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers. The Boston Celtics have a hole at center, and Howard will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Stealing a player away from their storied rival would be big for the Celtics as they try to cement themselves as a title contender. Howard's interior presence and rim-rattling ability would help Boston improve on both sides of the ball.
