Series Recap to Date

Friday's series opener was low scoring and tense, until St. Louis' Matt Carpenter ended the drama and sent Busch Stadium home happy with a walk-off single in the 10th inning. Saturday's game looked to be heading in a similar direction, before a rain delay dampened the atmosphere with the game tied at two runs after the fourth inning. Three-plus hours later, play resumed, with the Cardinals looking like a different team and waltzing to a 7-4 victory.

Cubs Lineup

Cole Hamels takes the ball from Joe Maddon for Sunday's matchup, in need of a quality start after a couple of recent shaky outings. The southpaw took the loss in allowing six earned runs over four innings pitched on May 27 at Houston. His ERA currently stands at 4.02, and has increased after each of his last three appearances.

Albert Almora Jr. gets the day off, with Javier Báez returning to the lineup.

Cardinals Lineup

Adam Wainwright will make his 12th start of the 2019 season, coming into the game with a 4-5 record and 4.94 ERA. The 37-year-old allowed eight hits and four earned runs in his last outing on May 28 against the Phillies, taking the loss over six innings. At Wrigley Field on May 5, Wainwright allowed six earned runs over five innings pitched in a 13-5 Cardinal loss.

Veteran catcher Yadier Molina was added to the IL on Friday (thumb), opening the door for positional depth to show off on the big league stage. Andrew Knizner will make his first start in the show Sunday, and Friday hero Carpenter will get to rest as Jedd Gyorko slides into the lineup at third base.

The Cubs return home after Sunday's matchup to play the Angels on Monday in a single game, after their April 14 series finale was postponed. The Rockies will be waiting to provide them with a midweek test right after.

The Cardinals get Monday off before welcoming the Reds to town. St. Louis then heads to Wrigley for another weekend series against the Cubs beginning on June 7.
