Cardinals' Record in May is Devastating After Starting Season So Well
By Sean Facey

The St. Louis Cardinals were off to one of the best starts in baseball in March and April, finishing 19-10, and fulfilling all preseason expectations.
May, however, has not nearly been as kind to them, as they've gone a league-worst 7-18 for the month and dropped to two games below .500.
The #STLCards had the NL's best record through the end of April (19-10) . . . and now have the league's worst record since the start of May (7-18). @MLBNetwork

A team that had (and still has) playoff aspirations has dug themselves into an incredibly deep hole, sharing company in the standings with the likes of the Reds and Pirates.
They only sit five games out of first place in the NL Central, but the Brewers and Cubs certainly will pose a tough challenge to overcome.
St. Louis has the talent to claw its way back on offense. With guys like Paul Goldschmidt and Marcell Ozuna in the batting order, and a rotation headlined by Miles Mikolas and veteran Adam Wainright, they could rebound eventually.
But is there enough arm talent there, absent valuable contributions from Carlos Martinez and Michael Wacha, to make a genuine run here?
The Cubs are heading to St. Louis this weekend.

The last time these two teams met on May 3rd, the Cardinals (20-11) were leading the NL Central by 2.5 games, while the Cubs (16-12) were still 3.0 games back.
Since then ...
Cubs: 15-11 (1st place)
Cardinals: 6-17 (4th pace)
They've got a series coming up against the Cubs and plenty of other divisional games left in the standings.
If they want to rebound from their abysmal month of May, then they have to start immediately.
