Cardinals Place Adam Wainwright on 10-Day IL

Just as their quest to get back to their winning ways has stalled, the St. Louis Cardinals will lose another arm.

They've placed veteran Adam Wainwright on the IL with a left hamstring issue.

The Cardinals righty strained his hamstring while running out a double in the top half of the fifth inning against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night. He later left the game in the bottom half of the inning.

The 37-year-old Wainwright is 5-6 on the season with a 4.46 ERA in 13 starts with the Redbirds. The Cardinals hurler became the sixth pitcher in the team's history to pass 2,000 innings pitched on Sunday.

Wainwright is no stranger to the IL, as he missed 104 games last year due to right elbow inflammation. However, he's been back to his reliable self for a large portion of 2019; this is a tough blow.

By placing the veteran on the IL, the Cardinals have recalled Ryan Helsley from Triple-A Memphis.

Helsley has been making frequent trips back and forth from Memphis to St. Louis this year. This is the fourth time the Cardinals have called the right-hander back up to the big leagues. Helsley has made six relief appearances for the Cardinals this season in total.

Hopefully, Wainwright will have a speedy recovery, and will be back with the Cardinals sooner rather than later.
