Cam Newton's Brother is Transferring to Auburn but History is Not About to Repeat Itself

The last time a quarterback named Newton transferred to Auburn, Cam Newton won the Heisman and a National Championship before being picked No. 1 overall in the 2011 Draft.

Auburn will try to catch lightning in a bottle twice after they landed former Howard quarterback Caylin Newton, Cam's younger brother, as a transfer. Caylin followed in his brother's footsteps as he's headed to the SEC, transferring to Auburn to serve as Bo Nix's backup.

Caylin pulled off a monumental upset of FBS school UNLV in 2017 and won MEAC Offensive Player of the Year in Brennan Malone's "Go-Go" offense in 2018, but an injury limited him to just four games last season.

The younger Newton has completed just 51 percent of his passes in three seasons at the FCS level, and threw 41 touchdowns against 32 interceptions. His athleticism should get him on the field, but at 6-0 and 195, he isn't the physical marvel his brother was, nor does he possess the rocket arm and refinement as a passer that Cam had.

Nix is by no means a tremendous passer, but he has more arm talent than the younger Newton. Expect Caylin to fill Joey Gatewood's spot as the backup after he left for Kentucky.
