Bud Grant Believes NFL Should Name Trophy After Don Shula and He's Completely Right

The NFL community has had a little over two weeks to reckon with the passing of famed Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula. How will the league end up honoring him?

One of Shula's former colleagues, Hall of Fame coach Bud Grant, proposed the idea in a recent appearance on Minnesota radio station KFAN to name a trophy after the legendary coach. We're quite on board with it.

"They should have a trophy for Shula," Grant said via Pro Football Talk. "I mean, they got the Lombardi Trophy, which I don’t think -- I’m not a big fan of Vince’s. He’s a great coach, but I think he did nothing near what Shula has done in the coaching field in the NFL. I think they should have some kind of a trophy, some kind of a recognition for Don Shula for the job that he did in the many years that he was in the NFL."

These are strong comments from Grant, who realized Shula's greatness first hand when the Dolphins defeated his Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VIII. When you consider everything that the former five-time Coach of the Year achieved during his post, Grant's suggestion is entirely substantiated.

Not only does Shula hold the record for most career wins with 347, but he won two Super Bowls and led Miami to a perfect season, the only one in NFL history, in 1972.

Whether it's re-naming the Coach of the Year award or something else, the league needs to implement a perpetual honor in Shula's name.
