The Denver Broncos are going with Drew Lock as the starting quarterback in 2020 after he made only five starts as a rookie in 2019. The team went 4-1 with Lock under center and there is a real sense of hype surrounding the young man this offseason.

Yet his sample size is still incredibly small and it may be wise to go easy on all the hype after just five starts. The lack of playing time did not stop former Broncos defense DeMarcus Ware from offering up his own major endorsement of the quarterback.

John Elway has a bad track record when it comes to drafting and developing quarterbacks in Denver. Lock showing positive results so early may be why so many, like Ware, are jumping on his bandwagon. There have been so many disappointments so it is easy to see those four wins and get excited.

Peyton Manning left after the 2015 season. That led to a period where young players like Brock Osweiler, Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian all flamed out while veterans Joe Flacco and Case Keenum didn't do much either. Lock finishing 4-1 to get the Broncos to 7-9 achieved that familiar sensation of a losing team having a ton of momentum heading into the next season.

Slowing down the hype train doesn't mean fans aren't rooting for Lock to fail. It just keeps expectations realistic for a player who has made five starts in his entire NFL career.
