To say that Brian Cashman stunned the baseball community when he opted not to trade for a starting pitcher at the deadline wouldn't even begin to describe everyone's reaction.

Masahiro Tanaka and James Paxton were wavering, and JA Happ doesn't even deserve to be recognized in this byline for his woeful contributions. Luis Severino was still on the shelf, and at the time, the New York Yankees only reliable hurler was Domingo German, who is now done for the year.

A player the Pinstripes were largely rumored to be connected with was former Blue Jays, now-Mets right-hander Marcus Stroman. And when the All-Star was dealt to Queens, it posed a lot of questions about Cashman's intentions. Well, as it turns out, the Yanks GM didn't exactly think highly of the Duke product.

“We were interested in Stroman but we didn’t think he would be a difference-maker,” Cashman said. “We felt he would be in our bullpen in the postseason.”

Shots fired!

It appears that the 52-year-old exec, all the way back in July, was ready to roll with a three-man rotation of Severino, Tanaka, and Paxton once the postseason arrived. To call that conclusion premature is entirely accurate.

There was no assuring that Sevy would return to the big leagues at the perfect time, and there was also no way to know that Paxton would ultimately right his ship this successfully.

With that being said, Cashman's settlement speaks volumes to just how much he knows and trusts the guys he's invested in.

As for Stroman, well, we know he wears his heart on his sleeve and won't tolerate Cash taking a shot at his game. Therefore, we'd be shocked if the 28-year-old didn't clap back during his next interview.
