On a day where Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour was told to keep Justin Faulk off the ice, a trade very swiftly became official.

The Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues are acquiring the long-time Hurricane in a major trade during the middle of the preseason.

In return, the Hurricanes will receive Joel Edmundson, top prospect Dominik Bokk, and a seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. Along with Faulk, the Blues also acquired a fifth-round pick for 2020.

The most impactful part of this trade comes with the Blues locking up Faulk on a major seven-year, $45.5 million dollar contract extension shortly after its completion. Faulk is a major addition to the defense of an already very strong team.

Faulk was a work horse through all eight of his seasons in Carolina. He played in at least 22 minutes per game every season, and has only played in less than 60 games once. Despite never making an All-Star team, he has consistently been one of the premier defensemen in hockey.

He helped lead the Hurricanes to the Eastern Conference Finals last season and had eight points in 15 playoff games. Faulk joins a defensive grouping that includes Carl Gunnarrson, Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Boumeester.
