The Atlanta Braves traded shortstop Andrelton Simmons ahead of his prime for a package including pitcher Sean Newcomb in 2015, and have been widely considered the losers of that deal. However, this year could be Newcomb's chance to prove everyone wrong.

Newcomb was demoted to the bullpen early last season after a wildly inconsistent 2018. However, he proved to be a reliable reliever, allowing just 18 earned runs during the season after he was taken out of the rotation. Now, with two opens spots in the starting rotation, Newcomb could have another shot.

Newcomb developed a lot during the 2019 season, and we would love to see him take another shot at starting on the mound for the Braves. Felix Hernandez and Kyle Wright are definitely going to be tough competition for the open spots, but Newcomb is a talented lefty, which gives him a definite leg up.

Cole Hamels likely won't be out long-term, but if Newcomb can prove himself early, he might be able to hold on to his spot in the rotation once the crafty lefty returns. Even if he moves back and forth to the pen, he'll have plenty of opportunity to prove that he can handle the starting role.

This is a lucky break for Newcomb, and he needs to show his growth on the mound if the Braves use him. He has the chance to be a secret weapon for the squad, and we're excited to see what he can do.
