Ben Simmons Explains Why He Thinks Anthony Davis Plays Better Defense Than Rudy Gobert

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert is regarded as one of the best defensive players in the entire NBA, if not the all-around No. 1. Looking at his accolades -- he's a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and has multiple NBA All-Defensive First Team selections -- it is easy to see why.

However, Philadelphia 76ers point guard Ben Simmons, himself a top defender, believes that Rudy Gobert isn't even the NBA's best among defensive big men. Rather, he's quick to grant that distinction to Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis.

The primary reason that Simmons thinks that Davis is the superior defender? He will guard anyone on the court, while Gobert is a protypical rim protector and isn't often found on the perimeter. Davis can go up against the best player on any team in a pinch.

"I look at (Anthony Davis). I think like he’s a better defender than Gobert, because he can defend, like, guards at times," said Simmons while live-streaming via Twitch

When asked who the top five defenders were in the league, Simmons listed off Davis as well as Kahwi Leonard, Patrick Beverley, Giannis Antetokounmpo and himself, notably leaving off Gobert.

As impactful a player as their is in the paint, Gobert is one of the top rim protectors of his generation. However, Simmons prefers guys that can come out to the perimeter and shut shooters down. For that reason, the young Philadelphia star isn't drinking the Stifle Tower Kool-Aid.
