The Houston Astros are looking to retain cheaper talent to complement the big stars and big contracts in town.

Martin Maldonado returned to Houston via trade in 2019 and earned a role for himself as Gerrit Cole's personal catcher. Cole is now in New York and rumors had come out about his catcher going with him. Instead, Maldonado is reportedly back with the Astros on a two-year deal that will see him earn $7 million.

The veteran catcher had an odd 2019 season before landing in Houston. He originally signed with the Kansas City Royals and was traded in mid-July to the Chicago Cubs. He was there for two weeks before the team no longer wanted him and was traded to Houston.

Maldonado backed up Robinson Chirinos, who is currently a free agent, and isn't exactly a major upgrade with his career .219/.289/.355 slash line.

In addition to Maldonado, the Astros also have Dustin Garneau and Garrett Stubbs on the roster at catcher. Garneau was just signed this offseason, so he should be able to fight for a spot this spring.

The 33-year-old slashed .213/.293.378 last season with 12 homers and 27 RBI, though it's his glove that had him courted by a few teams in free agency.
