Andrew McCutchen Sends Heartbreaking Tweet Overnight Before MRI

The Philadelphia Phillies' series in San Diego got off to a very disconcerting start when outfielder Andrew McCutchen injured his left knee while in a rundown between first and second base in the first inning Monday night.

The five-time All-Star fell to the ground clutching his knee, hinting that he suffered a potential serious injury, and needed to be helped off the field. And if McCutchen's dire need to clamp his injured leg immediately upon tweaking it wasn't enough to convince you that he faces a potentially lengthy stint on the IL, maybe his gut-wrenching tweet ahead of Tuesday's MRI will do the trick.

Ugh. If McCutchen's love for the game could ever be summed up in four powerful words, this would be them. We are utterly heartbroken for the former National League MVP.

The injury couldn't come at a worse time for the four-time Silver Slugger, who was finally starting to get into a groove at the plate. Additionally, he's been one of the most valuable leadoff men in all of baseball, slashing .256/.378/.457 to go with 42 walks and 45 runs scored.

McCutchen has also contributed 10 home runs and 29 RBI from the leadoff spot in his 11th big league season.

As McCutchen asks, let's all hold out a glimmer of hope that his MRI results aren't as devastating as we all presume them to be.

The team doesn't seem to be extremely hopeful however, as they promoted23-year-old outfielder Adam Haseley to the big leagues in a corresponding move.

The absence of Odubel Herrera, due to a domestic violence arrest, could prove costly to the team, as with McCutchen sidelined, one would presume Herrera would have rotated into the starting lineup.
