In April, former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville announced himself as a candidate for the 2020 Republican nomination for US Senate in the state of Alabama. Despite the bitter, white-hot nature of the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, the former Tigers boss has decided to give this run a go-- and he has found himself in a pretty favorable position at the moment.

It seems as though on-field college football loyalties do not necessarily overrule off-field political preferences, as despite a significant majority of Alabama Republicans supporting the Crimson Tide over the Tigers, a plurality also view Tuberville as the top pick in the race to unseat incumbent Senator Doug Jones, a Democrat.

It may just be a poll in the early stages of the primaries, but it is an impressive political debut so far for Tuberville. The ex-Auburn coach last coached collegiate football in 2016, where he was the head coach for the University of Cincinnati's football program. He additionally had head coaching stops at Ole Miss and Texas Tech.

Auburn won five bowl games under Tuberville, and his 7-3 record in the Iron Bowl against the Crimson Tide surely doesn't sit well with Alabama fans to this day. Despite his success against their preferred football team, Alabama Republicans seem to have forgotten enough of his past exploits and have lined up to support Tuberville in this primary election.
