3 Questionable Calls That Cost 49ers in Super Bowl LIV Loss to Chiefs

The San Francisco 49ers were the latest victim of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs' blitzkrieg attack, as the Niners entered the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV with a 10-point lead, only to find themselves down 11 in less than 15 minutes of game action. It doesn't make sense, and now 49ers fans are searching somewhere, anywhere, to blame. I've got good news for you!

While it's unfair to pit the entire defeat on NFL officiating, there were surely some questionable calls that 49ers fans will want a greater explanation for.

3. George Kittle OPI

Is this, by definition, offensive pass interference? We guess. Yet, based on the standard the NFL has set for such a call this year, we can't fathom how this crew felt the need to call this in such a critical spot. Had the Kittle catch stood, the 49ers could've gone into the half with a lead. Instead...not so much.

2. Personal Foul Non-Call on Jimmy Garoppolo

In this case, it's a non-call that 49ers fans will be unhappy about. Jimmy Garoppolo had played a solid game up to this point, and should've been gifted 15 yards for a personal foul considering the Chiefs defender leaned in with the crown of his helmet. For a league which is trying to make strides in player safety, this isn't a good look on the game's greatest stage.

1. Damien Williams Go-Ahead TD

Was Damien Williams out of bounds on the Chiefs go-ahead touchdown with just minutes remaining? The official explanation was no, and there really wasn't sufficient evidence either way. Because of this, the officials went with the call on the field. We don't necessarily blame them for this, but had that been called a non-TD on the field, it's quite possible it would've been upheld via replay. Football really is a game of inches, and the 49ers just happened to be on the wrong side of the pylon.
