3 Teams That Need to Sign Cam Newton Immediately After Release From Panthers

After signing Teddy Bridgewater to a $60 million deal, it became clearer that Cam Newton was not going to stick around for Year 1 of Matt Rhule's rebuild in Carolina. Following nearly a decade of service, the former No. 1 overall pick is scheduled to be released on Tuesday after the Panthers failed to find a trade partner for the former MVP. One of the most talented quarterbacks in all of football (when healthy) is on the open market, and these three teams need to consider signing the über talented gunslinger.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars

Gardner Minshew has officially beat out Nick Foles in Duval County, after throwing 21 touchdowns against just six interceptions in his rookie season, but he doesn't exactly have a stranglehold on the QB1 job. While Newton would certainly have to swallow his pride and enter Jacksonville as a backup, competing with Minshew represents one of his best chances to earn a starting job in 2020, given the dearth of teams inquiring about his services.

2. New England Patriots

After Tom Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New England quarterback room consists of Jarrett Stidham, Brain Hoyer, and Cody Kessler. That shouldn't be a depth chart Patriots fans are proud of. Newton's big, albeit inaccurate, arm and style of play is almost antithetical to what Josh McDaniels wants out of a quarterback, but he's on another planet when compared to any of the three New England quarterbacks in terms of raw talent. If Bill Belichick wants to win this year, Cam could be his best option.

1. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are the perfect landing spot for Cam. Even though they are expected to draft a quarterback in the 2020 draft, Newton could take over a stacked roster that could end up making a playoff run this season. However, LA is bizarrely fixated on veteran backup Tyrod Taylor, who is currently penciled in as the starter. It doesn't take a football savant to recognize the gulf in talent between the former MVP and a guy who was benched after three games in his last year as a starter. Once they get over their Tyrod fetish, Cam should look to link up with Anthony Lynn in the City of Angels.
