3 Players the Eagles Will Definitely Cut by the End of the Preseason Due to Depth

The Philadelphia Eagles have had their fair share of roster turnover this offseason, and that leaves them with a handful of positional battles. But with the regular season inching ever closer, there's no shortage of players who ultimately don't have what it takes to make the final 53-man roster. These three guys in particular can be expected to end up on the chopping block by the conclusion of preseason football.

3. TE Will Tye

Philadelphia is flush with depth at the tight end position heading into 2019. Unfortunately, it's Will Tye who will have to go. He hasn't played in an NFL game since 2017, and with Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert and Richard Rodgers hanging around, they have more than enough quality options that make Tye expendable.

2. OT Jordan Mailata

The Eagles value positional fluidity on the offensive line. It's one of their greatest strengths, and part of the reason their offense has been so successful in recent years. But with first-round pick Andre Dillard entering the mix at tackle, Jordan Mailata's presence is redundant. They've got players who could honestly be starters on other teams sitting second on the depth chart; this guy has barely scraped by thus far and will most certainly find himself released.

1. QB Clayton Thorson

It might not even take until the end of the preseason for the Eagles to show Clayton Thorson the door. There are a number of conspiring factors working against him, chief among them being excess depth. With Carson Wentz starting and Josh McCown and Nate Sudfeld backing him up, it would be foolish to keep a guy like Thorson on the roster. It also doesn't help matters that he's played poorly. In the preseason opener, he went 2-9 for 7 yards. The decision to cut him won't be difficult at all.
